Candida Injections for Warts: Using Your Immune System to Treat Stubborn Warts
Some warts persist despite over-the-counter medications and repeated freezing. Candida antigen injections stimulate the immune system to recognize and attack the virus causing the wart. At Pure Dermatology, I typically inject only the largest wart every three weeks and often combine the treatment with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy. Many patients require two to three treatment sessions at a minimum.
Candida Injections for Warts: Using Your Immune System to Treat Stubborn Warts
Warts are one of those conditions that seem simple until you develop one that refuses to go away.
I regularly see patients who have tried salicylic acid, home freezing products, and several office treatments without completely clearing their warts. Although liquid nitrogen remains one of our most common treatments, freezing alone does not work for everyone.
For stubborn or recurrent warts, one of my preferred options is Candida antigen immunotherapy. Instead of relying only on destroying the visible wart, this treatment encourages your immune system to recognize and attack the virus causing it.
What Is a Candida Injection?
Warts are benign skin growths caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. They can persist because HPV is particularly good at avoiding detection by the immune system.
Candida antigen is a purified preparation derived from Candida albicans, a common yeast to which many people have already developed an immune response. During treatment, a small amount is injected directly into a wart.
The injection does not cause a yeast infection. Instead, it creates a controlled immune response within the wart. I often explain this as helping the immune system notice something it has been overlooking.
Once activated, the immune system may begin attacking HPV-infected cells in both the injected wart and other warts elsewhere on the body. Research has found that intralesional Candida immunotherapy can produce improvement in both treated and untreated warts.
Why Do I Inject Only the Largest Wart?
When a patient has several warts, I typically inject only the largest one.
The goal is not to place medication into every individual wart. It is to generate an immune response that may work throughout the body. This means smaller warts that were never directly injected can sometimes improve or disappear as well.
Patients are often surprised by this. It is one of the main advantages of immunotherapy for someone with multiple warts.
Clinical trials have similarly treated the largest wart at three-week intervals while monitoring the response of both the injected lesion and other warts.
What Concentration Do We Use?
Candida antigen can be administered using different concentrations and treatment protocols.
In my practice, I generally use a concentration toward the higher end of the range used clinically. My goal is to produce a robust immune response while still considering the location of the wart, the patient’s age, and how the patient has responded to previous treatments.
A stronger immune reaction can cause more temporary soreness, redness, or swelling. Treatment therefore needs to be individualized rather than performed identically for every patient.
How Often Is Treatment Performed?
I typically repeat Candida injections every three weeks.
This gives the immune system time to respond and allows us to determine whether the wart is becoming smaller, flatter, or less thick.
Many of my patients require approximately two to three treatments. Some respond sooner, while larger, thicker, or long-standing warts may require additional sessions.
Three-week treatment intervals and a limited series of injections have also been used in published studies of resistant common and plantar warts.
Why Do We Often Combine Candida Injections With Cryotherapy?
I frequently combine the Candida injection with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy during the same appointment.
The two treatments work differently:
- Liquid nitrogen freezes and directly damages the visible wart.
- Candida antigen stimulates the immune system to recognize HPV-infected cells.
Cryotherapy treats the wart locally, while Candida immunotherapy addresses the immune response that may be allowing the infection to persist.
Not every patient needs both treatments. However, combination therapy can be useful when a wart has not responded adequately to freezing alone.
Does the Injection Hurt?
The injection causes a brief sting or burning sensation. Injections into the fingertips, skin around the nails, and soles of the feet can be more uncomfortable because these areas are naturally sensitive.
Most patients tolerate the procedure well, particularly because we usually inject only one wart.
The treated area may remain sore or swollen for a few days. When cryotherapy is also performed, a blister or crust can develop as the wart heals.
What Are the Possible Side Effects?
Most reactions are temporary and limited to the treated area. They may include:
- Pain or tenderness
- Redness
- Swelling
- Itching
- Peeling or crusting
- A blister from cryotherapy
- Temporary skin discoloration
More substantial swelling can occasionally occur, particularly when treating a finger or an area close to a nail. Generalized reactions such as mild flu-like symptoms are possible but uncommon.
Patients should contact the office for severe pain, rapidly worsening swelling, signs of infection, or another concerning reaction.
Does Insurance Cover Candida Injections?
Insurance coverage has two components.
The injection procedure is generally covered when performed for a medically appropriate diagnosis. However, payment for the Candida antigen medication depends on the individual insurance carrier and plan.
Some insurers pay for both the procedure and medication. Others may leave the patient responsible for part or all of the medication cost. Deductibles and coinsurance may also affect the final amount owed.
Coverage is never guaranteed, so patients concerned about cost should review their individual insurance benefits.
Is Candida Immunotherapy Right for Every Wart?
Candida injections can be particularly helpful for:
- Warts that have not responded to cryotherapy
- Multiple warts
- Plantar warts
- Warts around the nails
- Recurrent warts
- Warts that have persisted for months or years
It is not necessarily the first treatment needed for every patient. Other options include liquid nitrogen, salicylic acid, cantharidin, curettage, and bleomycin injections.
The best approach depends on the patient’s age, medical history, wart location, number of warts, and previous treatments.
Final Thoughts
Freezing is not the only option for a stubborn wart.
Candida antigen injections help direct the immune system toward the HPV infection. In my practice, I generally inject only the largest wart, repeat treatment every three weeks, and often combine the injection with liquid nitrogen. Many patients require two to three treatment sessions, although individual responses vary.
